Introduction to the Issues:

West Coast Action Alliance Video and introduction to the problem:  on Vimeo.                   on Youtube.

June 2015 – The Olympic Peninsula Is Not For Electromagnetic Warfare Training.” Independent filmmaker Mitch Mattraw joined the growing citizens’ protests against the militarization of the Olympic Peninsula, producing a 10-minute creative action alert film (click here to watch it.) Click here to read the press release from Olympic Peninsula Watch.  Olympic Peninsula residents are interviewed, along with an expert on the effects of electromagnetic radiation on living tissue.

June 2015 –  A thoughtful 19-minute documentary on the effects of sonar on marine mammals that presents new evidence and asks: Over the past decades, hundreds of whales and other sea creatures have been mysteriously washing up in beaches around the world, raising concerns from the environmental community: just how much damage have military sonars done to life under the sea?

Videos on Specific Topics

Noise of all types:

Sonar, three videos: “Orca and Navy Sonar.” Hear what Navy sonar sounds like and watch what it does to these marine mammals.  AND:  Lethal Sounds: Deadly Sonar Harms Whales. (Best video explaining how sonar harms them, and what to do about it.) AND: Sounds Under the Surface (explains sonar effects on tagged whales.)

Jet noise:

What Growlers are doing to the western side of Washington’s Olympic Peninsula at all hours.

KIRO TV. “VIDEO: Neighbors protest against noise pollution caused by jets,” July 15, 2015.

Navy 18G Growlers Over Patmore Ballpark, Coupeville, WA, Harming Children’s Hearing,” Youtube, April 25, 2013. This ballpark has since been closed.

Stealing my health, my property and my freedom,” video interview of a resident whose house is under the Navy’s flight path. More Coupeville citizens’ videos of jets flying overhead.

What an overflight sounds like at low altitude: 34 seconds of hell near the Canadian border. The jets fly right over homes. Residents say it often goes on all day.

“I got 130 decibels on my front porch!”  Watch this video interview in the home of a young couple with children, who want to move but can’t sell their house on Whidbey Island, Washington, because of jet noise. And this Citizens of Ebey’s Reserve video about OLF (Outlying Landing Field) Whidbey.

Recordings and soundscape meditations from various quiet places on the Olympic Peninsula, by Gordon Hampton: “The Last Quiet Places: Silence and the Presence of Everything.”

Effects of Airplane Noise on Communities (Experts in the field give presentations and answer the questions of the community, and strategies for dealing with the situation are discussed.)

From the Navy’s own Youtube videos, low-altitude flight over the Olympic Mountains:

Ted Talk by Bernie Krause, author of “The Great Animal Orchestra,” on how sound can be used as a tool for grading the health of an ecosystem. “The Voice of the Natural World.”

“The noise goes right to your bones.” Video of citizens pleading with utterly impassive Island County Commissioners for support on remedying serious public health impacts from jet noise. Significance: This is utterly compelling, eye-opening testimony, but these people, including former military personnel and their families, are being ignored by elected officials and threatened by Navy supporters. We recommend watching the entire video, called “Citizens Give County Commissioners an Earful.”

Electromagnetic Warfare, EM Radiation, and Effects:

Northrop-Grumman video on how Growlers detect and locate transmission beams from on-the-ground emitters using AESA (Active Electronically Scanned Array) radar.

History Channel video explains the origins, types and uses of directed energy weapons. (43 minutes)

The Pentagon’s newest weapons look like something out of ‘Star Wars’” Footage of weaponized lasers in use. The Washington Post, December 19, 2014. “The Pentagon’s electromagnetic ‘rail gun’ makes its public debut.” Footage. New weapon reaches Mach 7 in milliseconds, has a 110-mile range. The Washington Post, February 6, 2015.

May 2015 – Compelling interview with Dr. Martin Pall, Professor Emeritus, Washington State University, and one of the world’s foremost experts on the far-reaching effects of EMF radiation. Dr Pall directly challenges the navy’s public documents from September 2014, that electromagnetic radiation outputs from the proposed fixed and mobile emitters will be properly monitored and/or meet safety standards for human and animal populations not within the immediate vicinity of the emitters, and that according to the Navy, “no significant impacts on biological resources will occur.” Also read this article in the Examiner by Nancy Swanson, Ph.D.

Video: The Navy wants drone boats to overwhelm the enemy,” Washington Post, October 6, 2014.

“Realistic” military training in populated civilian areas:

Citizen videos of unannounced late-night Special Ops exercises over residential Port Angeles, with 4 Chinook and 2 Blackhawk helicopters. PDN article explaining this: “Army apologizes for helicopters that ‘terrorized’ Port Angeles,” Peninsula Daily News, July 12, 2013.

Presentation and slide show by Strategic Operations Command to the City of Bastrop, Texas describing “Realistic Military Training” (RMT) in the summer 2015 Operation Jade Helm 15, across 9 states. Of note is the definition of RMT at 1:23, and the steps normally taken to alert the community and work with local governments. The point of posting this video is that the Navy’s public NEPA process never revealed, but a 2012 email from the Navy to the Forest Service as well as a temporary permit did reveal, the intent to drive mobile electronic warfare emitters, and may have been driving them since 2010, “on existing roads and trails throughout the Olympic Peninsula…” for the purpose of conducting “realistic” electronic warfare training. Driving mobile emitters on public roads and in populated areas while conducting this training without notifying State or local governments violates the conditions laid out in the SOCOM presentation as well as the law. For more information, see Truthout articles from March 2016 and May 2015.

July 2015 – TRANSCRIPT: A Comparison of the Navy’s and the Forest Service’s Written and Spoken Remarks:  Comparing side-by-side the written and verbal statements made by the Navy and Forest Service is both eye-opening and useful, because there are so many discrepancies. We examined videos of what was said at the above-mentioned public meetings and compared them with internal and external agency documents. This is a transcript analysis, not a video.

Washington’s Olympic Peninsula is not the only place where this encroachment by military on public and private lands is happening.
